A Batavia native, "Smitty" attended Cardinal Community School and Indian Hills Community College. After working at several jobs out of college, Steve decided to give radio a try - something he'd always wanted to do - and enrolled in broadcast school in the Quad Cities. To bide his time until classes started, Steve applied for a part-time job at in Fairfield at KMCD. After a few weekend shifts, KMCD gave Steve a nightly spot - and broadcasting school would have to wait.
After spending four years at KMCD & KIIK (later to become Hot 96 FM), Steve decided to look for "bigger and better things." So he and his new wife, Jill, packed up for Carroll, IA, where he became assistant news director and afternoon drive announcer on KKRL & KCIM.
Steve's and Jill's love for the outdoors took them to his next job a year and a half later - midday announcer and promotions director at KS95 at the Lake of the Ozarks. Working in Central Missouri was great - "all that water for fishing, more golf courses than one man could play, and the number one station at the lake" - but something was missing: family.
Steve says, "I realized that bigger is not always better. As long as I was in radio I could be happy in only one spot - home." So Steve rejoined KMCD & Hot 96 FM, this time as program director.
Steve is heavily involved in community affairs in the Fairfield area, including serving on the AIM Empowerment Board. Steve and Jill enjoy traveling, outdoor activities and each other. They have a son, Frank Donovan.
Listen to Steve Smith and his sidekicks Emily Humble and Lee Muntz every weekday morning from 6:00 to 8:15 on 1570 KMCD.
